Membership – Grades

There are four grades of membership within the Association:


  • Certified Management Accountant - entitled to use the designatory letters CMA

  • Degree from a recognised university (see FAQ) or Professional Qualification in Accounting, completion of CMA units and 5 years relevant experience

  • Associate Management Accountant

  • Degree from a recognised university (see FAQ) or Professional Qualification in Accounting and 3 years relevant experience

  • Graduate Management Accountant - entitled to use the designatory letters GMA

  • Degree from a recognised university (see FAQ) or Professional Qualification in Accounting or completion of Graduate program

  • Management Accounting Affiliate - entitled to use the designatory letters MAA

  • Open Entry for those interested in the field of Management Accountancy

  • Student membership - not entitled to use any designatory letters; and

  • Honorary membership - available for distinguished persons whose services to Management Accounting and related disciplines in the opinion of the Executive Committee merit this award of membership.

    Experience :

  • For Certified Management Accountant membership - five years approved experience in a senior and responsible Management Accounting position is required.

  • For Associate Management Accountant membership - three years approved experience is required.

  • Applicants for Graduate Management Accountant membership must have a minimum education standard of a degree from a university or equivalent educational institution in accountancy or a related discipline.

  • For Management Accounting Affiliate - no management accounting experience is required. It has open entry for those with either 2 years supervisory managerial experience or 3 years of running one's own business. This category of members would be required to undertake an approved continuing professional development (CPD) program within 2-years of being granted such membership. Note that this CPD program can be done anywhere, for example via CMA short courses, CPA Australia seminars or even a university subject in accounting.

  • Applications for student membership must have a minimum education standard of year 12 or equivalent.

For the purpose of clauses 3.3(a) and 3.3(b) of the constitution, a demonstration of experience will be required in three main areas :

  • financial and cost accounting skills
  • application of the principles of cost and management accountancy to real management problems; and
  • direct involvement in resource management, decision-making and strategic financial planning.

The experience referred to in clause 3.3(d) must be verified by the applicant's sponsor and will be evaluated by the Membership Committee.

* Relevant experience in management accounting is broadly defined to include the gaining of experience in the provision of information in a wide range of managerial functions including costing, pricing, marketing, strategy, financial analysis, logistics, information systems, etc.
